Management of power lines

LenRed: Power Line Management

Routine inspection of power transmission lines is critical to ensure uninterrupted distribution of electricity. Traditional ground inspection methods involving surveyor teams are often very laborious and time consuming. Methods for calculating the distance between the transmission cable and the ground often involve heavy equipment such as height measurement bars and theodolites. This is a heavy workload for technical engineering and control personnel who may be located in deep deserts or dangerous or inaccessible terrain.

On the other hand, not all power line corridors are located in easily accessible areas, and therefore corridors can be difficult to inspect. A LiDAR system operating from a low-altitude aerial platform has no difficulty accessing and examining even the most rugged terrain quickly, cost-effectively and without putting people at risk. Provides accurate position information of cables, structures, vegetation, and soil along the power line corridor.

LendRed is a unique and personalized software that makes it easy to deliver to our clients, mostly national electricity companies, any final product faithfully following the client's specifications for electrical network projects such as the design of new lines, maintenance of the electrical network, detection of dangerous vegetation or 2D and 3D risk simulations.

The system

Through various surveying and analysis projects, we have been successful in creating an efficient workflow for many energy service companies (ESCO). With an experience of more than 200,000 km in projects for the study and maintenance of power lines (both in transmission and distribution) taking LiDAR data and / or aerial photography as a starting point, Lendel Media Solutions offers its clients an infinite variety of solutions that They cover various aspects such as:
● Comprehensive analysis of each study electrical network according to voltage.
● Risk level studies, dangerous vegetation.
● 3D modeling of the network.
● PLS-CADD, etc. We offer the products that best suit your project and budget.
● Quality control and pass adjustment.
● LiDAR point cloud classification (by voltage and risk).
● 3D modeling of power lines and 2D vectoring.
● Calculation of dangerous vegetation with LiDAR.
● Quality control of the results (99.99% precision).
● Calculation of safety distances to the ground.
● Pre-modeling of systems.
● Modeling and simulations with PLS-CADD.
● Creation of interactive dossiers (GEO-links).

Advantages of the system

1. Allows accurate and detailed analysis in real time of power lines with online visual information. It also provides very accurate information on those inaccessible inspection areas.
2. Considerable time saving. The company receives information of 500 km / linear every 18 days. In three months you can have accurate information of 20,000 km / linear.
3. Usually the maintenance of the lines is carried out by subcontractors. This allows the company the following advantages:
a. Control the work of the subcontractor.
b. Renegotiate price maintenance.
C. Analyze the work methods of the company and check if the work indicated has actually been carried out.
d. Provide maintenance with more accurate planning to carry out maintenance work.
4. The electric company will reduce costs depending on the surface to be analyzed between 30 and 40 percent.
5. It allows to study in depth the state of the lines, especially in areas of difficult access.
6. Theft of electricity. The system can detect with 100% precision those illegal cables connected to the main network and that imply a substantial loss of electricity due to the illegal use of the network.
7. Reduces insurance costs such as exhaustive control lines, the state of infrastructure, vegetation, etc.
8. Facilitates line analysis and cost renegotiation with insurers.

System novelty

Airborne lidar technology is widely accepted among energy utility companies as an efficient tool for acquiring geo-referenced spatial data for various applications essential to power line asset management. LendRed software offers tools to match flight lines, classify laser points, model terrain based on classified points, and vectorize cables, accessories, and towers. The vector data can be integrated into professional software and therefore used to conduct thermal capacity studies, analyze reconstruction projects, and generate logs as they are built. The LendRed sort routine can detect vegetation or other objects in and near the power line corridor from the laser point cloud. Information on so-called "dangerous objects" is useful for monitoring the safe area around the power line. Therefore, with maps showing the location of dangerous objects, a team can be sent to the field to remove, for example, vegetation before it damages the power line by growing too close to the cables, falling onto the cables during storms or cause "electric shocks" during forest fires. With LendModeler you can derive a soil surface model from the corridor laser point cloud and observe the slopes vulnerable to erosion and determine the impact on the power line. With accurate ground wire information derived from TerraScan LiDAR data, operators of heavy machinery can be guided not to knock down cables or endanger themselves by contact with high voltage cables.
